ABB’s Swedish research team together with global colleagues led the development of a circuit breaker that combines mechanical and electronic solutions to shut off high-voltage direct current (HVDC) in the blink of an eye. The prestigious annual award recognizes Swedish innovations that have reached commercial success.
“There’s an incredibly exciting development in the energy field today, and we at ABB are very happy to be an active part of that development. We are also very proud of the breakthrough with our ultrafast breaker for high-voltage direct current that contributes to a more sustainable world,” said Claes Rytoft, acting global Chief Technology Officer for ABB. “Innovation is key to ABB’s success and we will continue to invest substantially in the work of our technologists within our global R&D teams. We thank the jury for honoring us with the Swedish Innovation Award 2013.”
The Swedish Innovation Award is organized by the Swedish business journal Veckans Affärer, and technical consultants ÅF.
ABB has decided to donate the 100,000 kronor prize money to the non-profit association “Mattecentrum” (Math center), which aims to stimulate the interest for math and technology among children and young people.
ABB pioneered HVDC nearly 60 years ago and continues to be a technology driver and market leader in HVDC. Earlier this year, the MIT Technology Review rated the development of the hybrid HVDC breaker as one the 10 most important technology milestones of the year, and earned ABB a place among MIT Technology Review’s 50 most disruptive companies in 2013.
Thomson Reuters, the global news organization, also recognized ABB as one of theworld’s top 100 innovators this year.
